I like to think this piece isn’t about listening to your heart. Instead it feels like a piece about vulnerability, especially for Black girls; we’re tone policed every day and everything we say is seen as political so we shut down so that we’re more “digestible.” We end up having trust issues and we feel the need to explain our intentions in the smallest of situations so people don’t assume things about us when all we’re trying to do is spread thought. It took me a while to understand that if someone didn’t like me for what I was trying to do, it was actually a them problem.

Let’s try and understand ourselves first, guard our hearts, and embrace our vulnerable states. It’s not all up to us. We’re okay.
